Over the eight years it took to complete, the&nbsp;<em>Athena<\/em>&nbsp;project became the most difficult, challenging, and rewarding commission any figurative sculptor could hope for<span class=\"emDash\">\u2014<\/span>and hope to survive.<\/p>\n<p>This work required LeQuire to expand his knowledge of materials and sculpting techniques and to greatly broaden and deepen his knowledge of classical mythology. The unveiling of&nbsp;<em>Athena Parthenos<\/em>&nbsp;in 1990 made LeQuire a celebrity and figure of controversy throughout Tennessee and attracted favorable notice from classical scholars, archaeologists and art critics nationwide, along with articles in&nbsp;<em>Artnews<\/em>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<em>New York Times Magazine<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-112-1-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div class=\"panel-cell-style panel-cell-style-for-112-1-1\" ><div id=\"panel-112-1-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_media_image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><figure style=\"width: 655px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"655\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/secausa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/athena-1.jpg\" class=\"image wp-image-1152  attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" style=\"max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secausa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/athena-1.jpg 655w, https:\/\/secausa.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/athena-1-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">In 2002, LeQuire oversaw a gilding and polychroming process that used the latest archaeological scholarship to bring the statue to a finish.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-112-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-112-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-112-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><em>\u201cAlan LeQuire has managed to win and successfully complete two of the most ambitious public art commissions ever conceived...
